Environmental Risk Assessment

Α) At numerous industrial facilities of the same activity 

Environmental Risk Assessment at a network of industrial units or facilities of the same activity (e.g. service stations) gives the option of choosing the ones presenting the highest environmental risk for a potential burden of the underground soil and groundwater.

In these cases technical interventions for reduction and elimination of environmental risk are suggested, as well as environmental subsoil investigation phase II.

Β) At a specific site in which environmental site assessment phase II has already been implemented

Environmental risk assessment of a site after conducting environmental site assessment phase II, includes the generation of a site model (CSM: Conceptual Site Model), evaluating each time the data of present contaminants (qualitative and quantitative), the possibility of contamination migration and dispersal and the potential ecological receptors of the burden.

Thus the following sequence is defined:
SOURCE – PATHWAY – RECEPTOR

Environmental risk assessment of a site includes assessment of the following:

1. Historic data of the site
2. Installed infrastructure and condition of the facilities
3. Surrounding space – land use
4. Geological – Hydrogeological data of the site
5. Age of the facility and subsurface facilities
6. Activities and operational methods
7. Soil corrosivity
