Assessment & Planning of Restoration Measures for Uncontrolled Dump Sites

Uncontrolled dump sites are regarded as a major environmental matter, as they contaminate subsoil, groundwater and surface waters. Furthermore, fires can break out in these sites, resulting to the destruction of forest areas and causing great ecological disasters.

INTERGEO has participated in the research program MESUD-MED (Development of an Integrated Methodology for Decommissioning, Sanitation and Restoration of Uncontrolled Landfills) which registered and classified uncontrolled dump sites in Greece.

The main remediation techniques of active or inactive uncontrolled dump sites are:

  • Stabilization of organic contamination by in situ aeration systems
  • Site mining, collection and separation of waste. Selection of their final disposal or treatment method.
  • In situ remediation techniques for possible remaining contamination of subsoil, groundwater and surface waters.
